i got a tattoo on my back shoulder blade, covered entirely on sunday. i havent experience any itches or scabs.
or any dry skin at all, i put on vit. E each morning and night for the first 2 days, and regular vaseline the next day twice. and i started to use regular vaseline lotion containing vit. E. is this healing process normal? or do i have fast healing abilities? the only trouble i get is when i put a shirt on, it sticks to the ointment and my skin gets icky. i hate that feeling.
well, actually, the ointment (the vasoline) could be slowing down the healing process. It's actually very oily (as you stated) and suffocates a tattoo (or any scabby, healing wound). Plus, leaving any ointment on the skin softens the scab, and if it gets bumped or even hit with a hard stream of water, it can knock the color completely out of the skin.
After 2-3 days you can stop putting anything on it but a non-scented, no frills lotion to keep it moisturized. I mean you want to continue washing it to keep the area clean (2 x a day, unless you work out or work in an environment that gets your skin dirty often), but the body's natural healing abilities are a zillion times better than any ointment or drug you can put on the skin. And the longer you use something with those types of additives in it, the more risk you have of causing problems, like irritation from chemicals,allergic reactions, or something as simple as clogged pores (which can increase heal times and can be a big cause of infections in tattoos).
Use plain white water-based lotion, free of scents, colors, oils, aloe, oats etc.
Personally I really like Curell for my tats (about 70 hours work of em)
If i have excessive problems with dryness (like for larger pieces its especialy bad when it starts itching) I put a drop or two of jojoba oil on them. Just like the lipids that are naturally found in your skin, jojoba helps fight surface roughness, flaking, and fine lines. It can be used by people with acne-prone skin. Due to the unique molecular structure of jojoba oil, not only will it mix readily with the skin's natural oils (absorbs quickly, without making the skin feel tacky or greasy, nor does it clog pores), but it can inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria associated with acne.
